Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

T he best-selling full-color illustrated guide to computer terminology, completely revised and updated -- now with 5,000 entries. The First Edition of Prentice Hall's Illustrated Dictionary of Computing won raves all over the world. Eckhard Pfeiffer, Compaq's CEO, called it "a perfect reference." ADvantage called it "a must read," and Computer User Magazine called it "a fine reference." The brand-new Second Edition is even better. It includes more color photographs, illustrations and tables... all-new coverage of industry trends, including new projections... new contributions from experts in the U.S., Europe, Asia and Australia...and 1,000 new definitions. Filled with fun facts, hypertext references, and great quotations, this is a great reference book. MARKET : Anyone who uses, writes about or reads about computers.

CHOICE Review

Compared to the first edition, this version has about 25 percent more terms--5,000. As one review of the first edition noted (Unix World 10, no.5 [May 1993]:41), "too many of the photos are mug shots of computing pioneers or exterior views of equipment housings." This edition has not improved. The author (marketing director of Acer Computer Australia), when asked about competing products, said, "the Microsoft computer dictionary was good in the PC area, but did not cover other areas" (Newsbytes News Network, 17 Apr. 1995). Unfortunately, Nader's attempts to broaden this dictionary's scope become one of its flaws. From the pompous self-quotations at the head of each letter, to the "fun facts," "newsflashes," and well-intentioned style guide, this work seems to imply that we should be reading it from cover to cover rather than using it as a reference source. Alan Freeman's Computer Glossary: The Complete Illustrated Dictionary (5th ed., CH, Jun'91) costs a bit more but has a better focus and less fluff. C. Shaffer; University of Wisconsin-Madison
