School Library Journal Review

Gr 5-8-This attractive book contains brief biographies of 11 promoters of peace, presented in roughly chronological order: Andrew Carnegie, Jane Addams, Woodrow Wilson, Mohandas Gandhi, Ralph Bunche, Dag Hammarskjöld, Jimmy Carter, Desmond Tutu, Oscar Arias Sanchez, and Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan Maguire. The writing is clear, concise, and interesting; however, large portions of the profiles are devoted to the subjects' early lives, and remarks about their peacekeeping activities seem rather sketchy. The authors' tone is admiring, but they also tell about criticisms these people have received. There are one or two clear, black-and-white or full-color photographs per sketch. While even a short biography will do more to bring these leaders to life, this volume might spark readers' interest to investigate them further.-Carol Torrance, Lincoln School Library, Kearny, NJ (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 4-7. The writing is dull and plodding in this collective biography, and there are some awkward rhetorical flourishes ("We salute those who are still searching"). However, the range of people is interesting: the 10 peace activists include Mohandas Gandhi, Jane Addams, and Desmond Tutu, as well as Betty Williams and Mairead Corrigan Maguire of Northern Ireland. Several of the subjects have won the Nobel Peace Prize, and the history of the prize is part of the story. The design of the large-size volume is clear and accessible, with approximately six pages devoted to each person. There are occasional photographs, including full-page portraits. Brief bibliography. ~--Hazel Rochman
