CHOICE Review

Building on her earlier work on Maria de San Jose (a critical edition of Maria de San Jose's Word from New Spain, 1993, and A Wild Country out in the Garden, Maria de San Jose's "spiritual journals," which she selected, edited, and translated with Amanda Powell, 1999), Myers (Indiana Univ.) here looks at historical portraits and autobiographical texts of six religious: potential saints Rosa de Lima, Catarina de San Juan, and Maria de San Jose and not-quite sinners Juana Ines de la Cruz, Ursula Suarez, and Catalina de Erauso. The result is a well-written examination of church practices and conventions concerning confessional and hagiographic (auto)biography and a fascinating account of the interplay between Spain and the colonies at the interface of exceptional individuals and institutional codes. If the female model of the time was silent, obedient, cloistered, and virginal, deviations noted here illustrate a collective Christian identity constructed by figures of unquestionable richness of voice and experience. Best of all, Myers includes self-writings in English where, particularly, the ironic edge of Suarez's verbal play, Erauso's picaresque adventures as a soldier, and the intelligent modernity of Juana Ines de la Cruz (America's "tenth muse") stand out. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
