Booklist Review

"Fashion is a mirror," said Louis XIV, and Murray's book proves the adage's validity. She first cites causes and ideologies behind clothing, from the prehistoric to the present, and continues with brief histories of 11 French couturiers, from 1858 to 1988, analyzing the particular elements that comprise French fashion. The same treatment is shown six American innovators, from the 1920s to the present. Various aspects of the profession--licensing, design inspirations, textiles--are also discussed. While definitely not an in-depth explication of fashion, this well-written text is useful as a quick reference. Illustrated with black-and-white line drawings and photos. Bibliography; index. --Janet Lawrence
