This Second Edition is the premier name resource in the field. It provides a handy resource for navigating the web of named reactions and reagents. Reactions and reagents are listed alphabetically, followed by relevant mechanisms, experimental data (including yields where available), and references to the primary literature. The text also includes three indices based on reagents and reactions, starting materials, and desired products. Organic chemistry professors, graduate students, and undergraduates, as well as chemists working in industrial, government, and other laboratories, will all find this book to be an invaluable reference.
Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review
Users of this well-known collection of organic name reactions will appreciate this updated edition (1st ed., 1988), which encompasses the literature through 2004. Although coverage is thorough, Mundy (emer., Colby College) and colleagues have eliminated reactions without contemporary use. More than 300 reactions are listed in traditional format: two pages per reaction with definition, mechanism, notes and highlights, and examples. All are referenced to the primary literature with four to eight references per reaction. A nice feature is cross-listing to Michael Smith and Jerry March's March's Advanced Organic Chemistry (5th ed., 2001) as well as Encyclopedia of Reagents for Organic Synthesis (8v., 1995). Although very little explanatory text is provided, other features not found in similar books, such as Jie Jack Li's Name Reactions (2nd ed., CH, Mar'04, 41-4057) or Thomas Laue and Andreas Plagens's Named Organic Reactions (CH, Nov'05, 43-1571) help fill the gap. These include a helpful table of acronyms and a separate section on name reagents, the latter presented similarly to the reactions, one page per reagent; the commercial availability of each reagent is also noted. The page layout is somewhat crowded to make each reaction or reagent fit allotted space, but this comprehensive book contains a wealth of information. ^BSumming Up: Highly recommended.
