Instant Notes is an ongoing series of review volumes jointly published by Springer-Verlag and BIOS Scientific Publishers. Instant Notes provides a structured approach to learning by covering all the important topics in a uniform, systematic format. Each topic begins with a summary of the essential facts, followed by detailed explanations and clear, simple illustrations. The diagrams are easy to learn and understand. Instant Notes is ideal for anyone looking for a compact, effective alternative to massive works and accompanying information overload.

This book provides concise and comprehensive coverage of the key areas in physical chemistry. Topics ranging from states of matter, thermodynamics, and kinetics to bonding, quantum theory, and spectroscopy are presented in a format that is ideal for learning. Instant Notes in Physical Chemistry is aimed at students and professionals in physics, chemistry and the life sciences seeking an accessible reference to the area of physical chemistry.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [277]-279) and index.

CHOICE Review

This review book in outline form by Whittaker, Mount, and Heal (all, Univ. of Edinburgh, UK) emphasizes readability and a logical progression through physical chemistry rather than an encyclopedic listing of equations and definitions. Though presenting the ordinary range of topics, its quick reference form is shown by the absence of detailed mathematical derivations, problem sets and extended tables of thermodynamic properties, and its abbreviated bibliography and appendix. Each section (i.e., chapter) starts with "Key Notes," which present the important concepts of the subject area. Important terms and phases are in boldface, and illustrations are clear and informative with good legends. The presentation is not always rigorous, e.g., thermodynamics, where the normalization of thermodynamic parameters to the molar basis is not indicated (e.g., enthalpies of combustion and formation, lack of stoichiometric coefficients in the equations using standard reaction enthalpies). Also, the standard state is defined with the older convention of 1 atmosphere using the superscripted theta notation, commonly presented with the newer convention of 1 bar. The more readable style and lack of extended topic development make this revision suitable as a supplementary aid for introductory students of physical chemistry or a quick review source for the advanced scientist. Upper-division undergraduates. J. F. Belliveau; Providence College
