Beginning with the 1760s, when lynching and vigilantism came into existence in what is now the United States, this bibliography fills a void in the history of American collective violence. It covers over 4,200 works dealing with vigilante movements and lynchings, including books, articles, government documents, and unpublished theses and dissertations. Following a chapter listing general works, the book is arranged into four chronological chapters, a chapter on the frontier West, a chapter on anti-lynching, and chapters on literature and art.

The book opens with a chapter devoted to general works. It then includes chapters on the period from the Colonial era to the Civil War, the Civil War through 1881, and the periods from 1882 to 1916 and 1917 to 1996. The work then turns to the frontier West and to anti-lynching bills, laws, organizations, and leaders. Finally, the book includes chapters on vigilantism in literature and art.

Includes indexes.

CHOICE Review

Lynching and vigilantism came into existence in what is now the US between 1760 and 1770. Between then and 1952, the first lynchless year, almost 5,000 people fell victim to "deliberate murder by a mob having a common purpose and targeting one or more previously specified individuals." During this time there were also 326 instances of vigilantism--movements that sought the "creation and enforcement of law by organized, extralegal groups in the supposed absence of legal law enforcement." Perhaps the darkest phase was the decade after WW I when some ten percent of victims were burned alive. Lynching and vigilantism were always controversial and created intense debate, much of which found its way into print. It is the particular contribution of this book that this vast material is now accessible to researchers. The 4,265 entries are arranged in nine sections, five chronological and the remainder treating special topics (the frontier west, the antilynching movement, prose literature, poetry and film, and other works of art). Most entries are annotated, although probably more briefly than novices will find convenient. This remarkable compilation will be a guide to researchers for a long time. P. L. Holmer; Southern Connecticut State University
