The emphasis of this book lies in the teaching of mathematical modeling rather than simply presenting models. To this end the book starts with the simple discrete exponential growth model as a building block, and successively refines it. This involves adding variable growth rates, multiple variables, fitting growth rates to data, including random elements, testing exactness of fit, using computer simulations and moving to a continuous setting. No advanced knowledge is assumed of the reader, making this book suitable for elementary modeling courses. The book can also be used to supplement courses in linear algebra, differential equations, probability theory and statistics.

Includes bibliographical (p. 423-426) references and index.

CHOICE Review

As a pedagogical attempt to introduce, at an elementary level, the general concepts, principles, and methods of mathematical modeling, Mooney and Swift provide an excellent approach to contemporary modeling. Unlike some other modeling books, which basically discuss standard models, they emphasize how models are built and reinforce the modeling techniques by providing counterpart models currently being used. With the prerequisite being basic calculus, a good attempt is always made to explore the relevant mathematics required for particular modeling concepts. This is contrary to standard mathematics or calculus works, where models are chosen to match the mathematics being studied. As a well-balanced book concentrating on dynamical systems and stochastic modeling, it covers discrete and continuous dynamical systems, with the basic mathematical tools being difference and differential equations, respectively. Solutions to these difference and differential equations, and fixed points and stability analyses for deterministic models, together with statistical testing for the stochastic models, are adequately treated. A number of interesting projects provided will give students an opportunity to experience firsthand the art of mathematical modeling. There is an introduction to software such as Mathematica and Maple, and a Web site with resources and information is maintained by the Mathematical Association of America . Highly recommended.
