Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

The book was conceived because of a widely felt need to bring together scattered studies of women in all Caribbean language groups. This book examines the lives of women in the multicultural society of the contemporary Caribbean where one-third of household heads are women.

CHOICE Review

A collection of 18 essays on many aspects of women's lives in the contemporary Caribbean, specifically, in Jamaica, Curacao, Montserrat, Barbuda, Dominica, Guadeloupe, Guyana, Suriname, Nevis, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Grenada, Trinidad, and Cuba. Momsen, a geographer, provides an introduction. Four essays are concerned with women in the domestic domain and the community, and five with the intersection of reproduction and production. The other nine essays focus on women's changing economic roles in rural and urban employment. Common themes include the interaction of race, class, and gender differentials, the multiplicity of women's work, and the contradiction between the public activities of women and the patriarchal ideology that restricts them to domestic roles. The topics are diverse, but the essays consistently meet a high standard of research and clarity. Although each essay has a list of references, a comprehensive bibliography would have been useful. Highly recommended, alongside Olive Senior's Working Miracles (CH, Sep'92) for multidisciplinary Caribbean and women's studies collections at the upper-division undergraduate and graduate levels. O.
