"Organized in a browser-friendly, single-column format, the American Heritage Dictionary of American Quotations contains more than five thousand quotations on over five hundred topics, from Advertising to Massachusetts to Zeal, from the American Revolution to Marriage to the West. Approximately thirty percent of the entries are annotated, setting quotations in historical context, providing additional information about the writer or speaker, giving earlier and later examples of similar turns of phrase, and assessing questions of authenticity and originality - for instance: Mark Twain's famous "Put all your eggs in one basket - and watch that basket!" was advice he himself received, and in those very words, from that canny Scotsman Andrew Carnegie!" "The chronological arrangement of quotations within topics is another distinctive feature of the book, allowing the reader to trace the progress of the American Revolution, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, and other key historical sequences, while also demonstrating how Americans' views have evolved over time on such topics as Education, the Environment, Military Strategy, the Media, Politics, Religion, the Presidency, and Sports - among many others."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. Library Journal Review

Including some 5000 American quotations divided into 500 topics ranging from Abolition to Youth, this volume has a chronological subarrangement meant to help readers trace changing attitudes. For example, the Vietnam War entries begin with Eisenhower's "falling domino principle" and end with the last American ambassador saying that the "national will had collapsed." Unfortunately, this scheme does not always work. Many of the topics are not ones that change significantly (e.g., Experience), while others, such as Experts, have only one entry. The editors (who worked together on The New International Dictionary of Quotations, NAL Dutton, 1994. 2d ed.) claim that their "extensive annotations" distinguish this collection from others, but most entries do not have such annotations. The author and key word indexes, which were not seen, will be indispensable. Despite its drawbacks, this is a well-selected and up-to-date compilation appropriate for most libraries.‘Peter A. Booklist Review

This compilation is one of that special breed of reference books that is both suitable for browsing and satisfactory for ready-reference use. Miner and Rawson are the editors of several other quotation books, including The New International Dictionary of Quotations [RBB S 15 93]. Some 5,000 quotations are arranged by topic from "Action and Doing" to "Youth"; within each category, they are presented chronologically. Keyword and author indexes are also provided. The chronological listing of quotations on a subject allows the reader to trace the development of American attitudes. Some 30 percent of the quotations included are annotated, a feature much too uncommon in quotation books. These notes are very helpful in debunking misquotations and setting quotations in their proper context. Quotation origins range from the expected historical sources to song lyrics, titles of novels, and memorable movie lines. Numerous cross-references provide additional points of access to the questions selected. This rich and interesting collection will supply those in need of an American reference on almost any subject with a broad array of quotations drawn from prompt books, screenplays, advertisements, and more. Browsers will enjoy its variety, and reference librarians will appreciate its careful organization. Suitable for most reference collections.
