School Library Journal Review

Gr 6 Up‘By focusing more on teenage pregnancy and less on poverty, this book comes across as having the goal of affecting behavior rather than providing information. The lecturelike tone is likely to put off most readers; unless they're using this title for a report, it's unlikely that they'll stick with it. Loaded with statistics and explanations for teenage pregnancy, the book presents the link between poverty and early pregnancy mainly as a warning. Young people deserve a more honest and objective view of the issues involved. For instance, recent research is showing more and more that poverty is a causal factor in teenage pregnancy and less that poverty is caused by early pregnancy itself. Illustrated with black-and-white and full-color photographs and laid out in the typical supplemental textbook style, the text is broken up with case studies and sections that provide additional statistics. For young adults interested in understanding the issues surrounding the subject, Teenage Pregnancy (Greenhaven, 1997) from the "Opposing Viewpoints" series is a much better choice.‘Melissa Gross, Beverly Hills Public Library, CA (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

Gr. 6^-10. Both of these titles in the Teen Pregnancy Prevention Library offer vignettes and teen testimony as hooks to deeper discussions of issues. Designed to attract reluctant and less-proficient readers, the books offer solid information about the benefits of abstinence before marriage and the relationship between teen pregnancy and poverty. It's Okay to Say No realistically addresses the challenges of a sexually abstinent lifestyle, yet convincingly presents its sometimes less-immediate benefits. The only omission is a detailed how-to-say-no-gracefully discussion as is found in Lynda Madaras' books and several abstinence curricula. A few "good lines" would have been helpful. Teen Pregnancy and Poverty is so well done that it could have been used for teen research if the author had consistently documented her sources. Although poorer readers may be put off by footnotes and a laundry list of studies, they certainly deserve at least a source note at the end of the book indicating the origin of Miller's statistics and conclusions. Both titles include a glossary, help list, and further reading bibliography. --Frances Bradburn
