CHOICE Review

Metzger is a psychologist with 20 years of experience in alcoholism counseling who has written an excellent book that is similar to Sharon Wegscheider-Cruse's Another Chance: Hope and Health for the Alcoholic Family (1981). There are 9 chapters, an index, and more than 180 references. Chapters treat problem drinking and the stages of alcoholism (explaining the development of abuse and the denial that is its companion), the counseling of children of alcoholics, family therapy, and employee assistance programs in the workplace. Of specific professional interest are the chapters on conducting the diagnostic interview, sample intake and interventions, and creation of a treatment plan. A well-grounded premise of the text is that only Alcoholics Anonymous-based programs will work, and counselors in the field find this to be true. The 12-Step Program of AA is given in the resource section. Overall, this work is readable, applicable, down-to-earth, and of practical use to college students in summarizing our current approach to recovery from alcoholism. A highly recommended acquisition that is valuable for the interested lay reader or college undergraduate, as well as for the diverse professional or paraprofessional audience for which the text is intended (psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, nurses, clergy, and other counselors).-L.
