Two estranged fortysomething sisters meet in a small Spanish town to pack up the house in which their last parent has died. As they do, both their long-smoldering resentments of each other and their plans (with their husbands) for the estate come to the surface. First performed to international acclaim in 1985 and winner of Lope de Vega Prize, this play explores various aspects of women's experience in Franco's Spain, along with such issues as parental influences on children, the emotional force of memory, and the illusory nature of freedom. This English translation was first performed in May 2000 in South Carolina. Although the themes are not new to American audiences, Junyent's dramatization was a major breakthrough in Spanish drama and, with the right performers, should provide a highly theatrical performance. Recommended for all script libraries and collections of translated Spanish literature.DRobert W. Melton, Univ. of Kansas Libs., Lawrence (c) Copyright 2010.
