Booklist Review

Gr. 6-12. With excellent photographs, many of them in color, and a spacious format, this is a lively overview of the events leading up to South Africa's first democratic elections. In a clear journalistic style, Meisel gives the background for the triumphant election of Mandela. She begins with the excitement of recent months, then goes back to give a general history of South Africa, showing what it was like to live in a society where racism was the law. She describes the long struggle and then the dismantling of apartheid. Finally she discusses the problems facing the new government. There's a brief bibliography but no other documentation. Like a magazine article, this is not for in-depth research but for readers eager to know in some detail what happened and what it means for the future. ~--Hazel Rochman
