CHOICE Review

This very impressive document was prepared for the Council of Ministers of the Commission for Labor Cooperation, established by the North American Agreement on Labor Cooperation (NAALC), which is a supplementary agreement to the North American Free Trade Agreement. It was triggered by a ministerial request from Mexico to investigate an action by Sprint Corporation to close La Conexion Familiar one week before a union election. The report consists of five parts directed to legal frameworks, union organizing systems, a review of administrative and judicial data, economic and social context, and summary and issues for future consideration. There are also six appendixes, of which "A" through "E" succinctly and thoroughly summarize data from all three countries. As a reference document, this report provides valuable contrast and comparison between and among the signatories of NAFTA with respect to labor law practices. It remains to be seen what results might evolve from this report and further, if NAALC will aggressively pursue additional investigations of common concern. On the basis of the summary data alone, this report is worthy of acquisition. A significant bibliography concludes the volume.
