As U.S. jail populations continue to burgeon, more and more pressure is being placed on mental health services to help manage potentially explosive situations. When correctional administrators, criminal justice planners and consultants, mental health clinicians, and social science researchers seek guidance, they find little in the literature. This book fills that void by combining solid empirical data with a practical ``nuts and bolts'' approach drawn from careful scrutiny of 43 jail mental health programs throughout the U.S. Based on first-hand observations and interviews with jail correctional and mental health staff, it offers both general guidelines and specific strategies for setting up appropriate mental health programs.

CHOICE Review

This is must reading for anyone interested in planning for services for the mentally ill in jails. Using information from on-site visits and interviews, questionnaires, and telephone surveys, this volume presents the results of a national study of the organization and delivery of jail mental health services in 43 communities across the US. The authors describe current standards and major approaches to service delivery; assess the perceived effectiveness of the organization of jail mental health programs; discuss the frequency and scope of conflict between mental health and correctional personnel; and consider factors that contribute to program survival and development. Stressing the importance of mental health program planning for local jails, the authors offer five basic principles or guidelines for services that can be adapted for particular institutional needs. These principles are illustrated in case studies from three different sites (New York State; Palm Beach County, Florida; and Boulder County, Colorado). The final chapter provides a brief primer for mental health professionals who treat clients in local jails. Clearly written, with a minimum of jargon and few statistics. Recommended for public, college, and university library collections. -C. S. Widom, Indiana University--Bloomington
