CHOICE Review

Issues about food or diet are often seen as only nutrition or health problems. This book shows how the information available to the public is often a social problem instead of a nutrition or health problem, a perspective that anyone interested in nutrition would do well to recognize. One section addresses why certain topics become news items and public concerns that are not in proportion to risk. The writing style is aimed at an educated audience, but anyone interested could understand the major ideas. The coverage is not comprehensive, and some of the topics selected for inclusion seem arbitrary and disconnected. (It might have seemed less so if the articles had been about only one country.) Several varied aspects are included rather than one aspect of nutrition information. Maurer and Sobal have produced a good basic introduction to the subject. Recommended for any nutrition or social studies collection. Upper-division undergraduate through professional.
