School Library Journal Review

ea. vol: maps. photogs. bibliog. chron. index. (World Leaders Past & Present Series). CIP. Chelsea House. 1987. PLB $15.95. Gr 7 Up In Khomeini, Gordon looks behind the newspaper headlines and angry epithets to the complex series of events which lead to Iran's Islamic Revolution and the rise of its controversial leader. In the first half of the book, he goes back to the beginnings of Islam to explain how early power struggles bear on today's events. Gordon defines many Islamic terms that may be unfamiliar to readers. The second half of the book is a succinct study of the Iranian revolution including Mohammed Reza Pahlavi's rule (1941-1979) and Khomeini's unremitting opposition. The Shah's deposition, the ensuing power struggles, Khomeini's reforms and purges, and Iran's entry into war with Iraq are discussed. The book is more than just a study of Khomeini; it is an objective study of one of the 20th Century's most important revolutions. In contrast, Hussein is much more of a straightforward biography. Hayes and Matusky portray him as a man as interested in fast cars as governing his country, but one who has grown in his kingship and has been successful in maintaining stability in his country. In both books, clear black-and-white photographs appear on every page and extend the text. These books give objective and balanced views of leaders and events in the modern Middle East, and would make excellent reading for students.Judith L. Olson, Landsdowne-Emrath Library, Lexington, Ky. Booklist Review

Gr. 6-10. For the World Leaders Past and Present series, Matusky and Hayes record the life of Jordan's King Hussein. Noting that his family traces its ancestry back to Muhammad, the authors begin their portrayal with Hussein's great-grandfather. They encapsulate the last hundred years of Jordanian history into understandable form while commenting on the strengths, faults, and personalities of its rulers during that period. The slow transformation of Hussein, who became king at the age of sixteen, from schoolboy (at Harrow) and adventurer to responsible leader unifies the narrative as it chronicles events in his controversial life and troubled country. Following the standard format of the series, good black-and-white photographs appear on nearly every page, bringing the background and characters into sharper focus. An interesting look at a modern monarch. CP. 956.95'04 (B) Hussein, King of Jordan / Kings, queens, rulers, etc. [CIP] 86-24486
