Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This major book reviews and analyses the changes that have taken place in public administration in Britain and North America over the last ten years and which will continue to have a profound impact on central and local bureaucracies well into the next century.

Managing the Public Sector provides a critical introduction and successfully combines a review of the literature with original research. It relates theory to practice and highlights the problem of implementation. It covers all the major issues including privatization, and the importance of the business sector both as a partner and a powerful lobby for efforts to use market mechanisms to devolve power.

This thoroughly modern, up-to-date book will be essential reading for all courses on public administration and policy analysis and the management of the public sector.

Includes index.

Bibliography: p. 202-216.

CHOICE Review

Amid the flurry of mandates from politicians, analysts, and pundits to "reinvent" the administrative apparatus of government in both the UK and the US, Massey offers a keen discussion of the broader theoretical concerns that underlie these prescriptions for reform. What is the legitimate role for an administrative apparatus in a democratic system? And is the market an adequate alternative for protecting liberties and ensuring equity and accountability? Massey argues that in both countries, the centralized development and application of public management strategies, and a dramatic shift towards the privatization of government functions are both pieces of a larger "New Right" effort "to get the state to wither away." The implications of a parliamentary system versus separation of powers, and the dynamics of federalism and local and state governance under severe budget constraints are examined to assess the success of the New Right in both the UK and US. Whether or not one agrees with Massey's premise, this work challenges the reader to examine the arguments for "efficiency" in the more complex context of democratic governance and the protection of liberties. Massey incorporates documentary research, literature reviews, and his own interview data to provide a rich examination of an important phenomenon. Advanced undergraduate through professional. A. M. Khademian; University of Wisconsin-Madison
