Covering music written for the harpsichord, piano, clavichord and other instruments, this volume presents the canon of 18th-century keyboard music from J.S. Bach through the early works of Beethoven. Beginning with a survey of the characteristics of Baroque and Classical keyboard music, its instruments and the primary issues of performance practice, this book presents an introduction and guide to the works of the Bach family, Scarlatti, Clementi, Haydn, Mozart and many others.

CHOICE Review

This compilation of articles by eminent scholars of the 18th century provides information on the evolution of keyboard instruments, discussion of performance practice, and investigative studies of the major composers of the period. Although the book is arranged by the composers treated, the authors restate and reorganize familiar information and material by basing discussion on tonality, forms, and geography. The format of the book is a model of what a compilation of essays should be. The bibliographies are uniformly generous, and the volume is laced with an abundance of examples. The composer studies, focusing on the major names but including some lesser lights, are described as "the most recent research ... [offering] new insights and critical evaluations." Despite the evident excellence of the articles, it is sad and ironic that in 1994 an important book on music continues the historic omission of women composers. Had the likes of Marianne Mart'inez, Maria Theresia von Paradis, Elizabeth Weichsel Billington, and Anna Bon been given as much attention as Charles Dieupart, Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer, and Gaspard Le Roux, this would truly be a worthy volume.
