Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Deborah Marks examines current theories and practices relating to disability. The focus of the work is not disabled people as 'objects' of study but rather an analysis of disability as it has been historically and culturally constructed and psychically experienced. The chapters cover:
* language and discourse
* the disabled people's movement
* the 'disability' professions
* public policy
* unconscious investments and interpersonal relationships
* knowledge and the politics of disability.

This text will be essential reading for students on the growing number of Disability Studies courses, as well as students, policy-makers and professionals in social policy, social work, cultural studies and nursing.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [193]-209) and index.

CHOICE Review

According to Marks (and others), those individuals labeled as "disabled" suffer discrimination not unlike that experienced by women and ethnic and racial minorities. This has led to the field of disability studies--a program of research directed to understanding the forces that adversely affect those with one or another physical or psychic limitation and to remedying this situation. In this turgidly written book, Marks, inter alia, examines the role of medicine in regulating disabled individuals through diagnosis and medical treatment; argues that disability, while an obvious "fact" in the lives of many individuals, is nevertheless a socially constructed category; suggests that defining some people as disabled serves the needs and interests of putative caregivers; and notes that the terms used to describe disabled people, either positively or negatively, reinforce the view that they are a distinct category of individuals. Throughout she asserts unconvincingly that psychoanalysis will aid in the study of disability. In this reviewer's judgment, the main contribution of Marks's book is to remind readers that disability is a continuum, viz., everyone is disabled to a greater or lesser degree. Graduate, faculty. D. Harper; University of Rochester
