CHOICE Review

A relatively slim volume that contains a wealth of information on Congress. More than 100 tables detail facts on the members of Congress and their work. The chapters on the members, elections, campaign finance, committees, staff and operating expenses, workload, budgeting, and voting alignments provide historical and current figures. Published biennially, the 1993-94 edition updates the tables variously through 1991, 1992, or 1993. A brief introduction to each chapter provides an overview of the topic and trends. Eighteen charts and graphs supplement the statististical tables, and the 57-page appendix presents information on individual members of the 103rd and 102nd Congresses, such as years of service, age, election results, and voting ratings by various groups such as Americans for Democratic Action. Various public and private sources are used for all data. This is the only source available for such extensive statistical data on Congress. Congress A to Z (CH, Mar'89) and the Guide to Congress, (4th ed., 1991) contain fewer than 18 statistical tables each, concentrating on such basics as workload, pay, campaign expenditures, ethnic composition, and votes. No library serving a political science curriculum should be without Vital Statistics.
