Described on its dust jacket as ``more than a dictionary, more than a grammar, more than a manual of style,'' this book attempts to combine three reference books in one and does in fact accomplish a great deal, but offers less in each area it claims to cover than do the specialized tools to be found in most libraries. It is nevertheless eminently suitable for home and office. It has 15,000 dictionary entries defining words, in addition to its usage entries. It also attempts to be a style manual and includes brief but informative articles on a variety of topics such as capitalization, abbreviations, hyphenated compounds, and names. Most articles are succinct, e.g., cannot help: ``cannot but, cannot help but, pref. in that order.'' Many entry terms are offered without explanation, e.g., Holland-America Line (the point apparently being to hyphenate). Other entries identify persons and places in the news at the time of the book's publication (e.g., Hu, Krishna Menon).
