Protecting the global environment is a single-minded goal for all of us. Environmental engineers take this goal to task, meeting the needs of society with technical innovations. Revised, expanded, and fully updated to meet the needs of today's engineer working in industry or the public sector, the Environmental Engineers' Handbook, Second Edition is a single source of current information. It covers in depth the interrelated factors and principles that affect our environment and how we have dealt with them in the past, are dealing with them today, and how we will deal with them in the future. This stellar reference addresses the ongoing global transition in cleaning up the remains of abandoned technology, the prevention of pollution created by existing technology, and the design of future zero emission technology.

CHOICE Review

This program updates and expands the original version (v. 1, CH, Jun'75; v. 2, 3, CH, Oct'75; 2nd ed., 1997). Though intended for environmental professionals, it will also be useful to those outside the field looking for a single comprehensive reference. The content and presentation are suitable for upper-division undergraduate and perhaps introductory graduate courses in environmental engineering, although no problems or worked examples are provided. The 11 chapters and insightful introduction provide broad coverage of the most important environmental engineering topics: environmental laws, regulations and standards; impact assessment; pollution prevention; air pollution; water pollution; wastewater treatment; ground and surface water; noise pollution; solid waste; and hazardous waste. Sections on water and wastewater are the most extensively covered (more than 500 pages). The material is well written, and the most critical information is cited, generally using classical sources. Although some mathematical equations are provided, a descriptive approach to the science and technology involved in environmental engineering is emphasized--the book cannot be considered a design handbook. The material is reasonably current, certainly to the early 1990s, and useful information and citations are provided on many recent initiatives, e.g., pollution prevention and indoor air pollution. As with all handbooks, readers will need to turn elsewhere to find the latest technology developments, environmental standards, and specialized topics. Compiled as Adobe 3.0 text, the handbook consists of some 1,400 pages with numerous figures, tables, and illustrations, all of high quality. The text is searchable and indexed. The program can be run directly from the CD-ROM once Adobe 3.0 (included) is installed. Alternately, a full installation requires only modest disk space (about 20-26 MBytes). Site licenses and subscription updates are available. Upper-division undergraduates and up. S. A. Batterman; University of Michigan
