CHOICE Review

A society dominated by electronic media needs to instruct students in ethical deliberation. Limburg's book attempts to fill this gap, but the end result is not entirely successful. Although the book is pleasantly written, employs clear, accessible terminology, and offers a variety of timely case studies, it raises more questions than it attempts to answer. The organization is confusing: it leaps back and forth between radio and television, making it difficult for the reader to focus on the issues. Some of the case studies, which include references to "shock jocks" such as Howard Stern and Rush Limbaugh, are weak on details and seem one-sided. The impact of music video and the clash between network and cable standards are barely mentioned, let alone given the careful scrutiny they deserve. The book's most significant shortcoming, however, is its failure to lay out thoroughly principles of ethical deliberation; the reader is left with a vague impression that ethical standards are, on the whole, individualistic interpretations--an approach that rests uneasily with the concept of social responsibility. Useful only as an introductory source for general readers, lower-division undergraduates, and community college and preprofessional students; other audiences may find the case studies stimulating enough to trigger further research.
