CHOICE Review

Feldman and Lewenson (both, Pace Univ., New York) offer a fascinating book about 45 nurses participating in the political process as either elected officials or appointed office holders. The stories, told through a series of interviews, serve to introduce the values, lessons, frustrations, and strengths that nurses have brought to the political arena during the 20th century. The book is concisely written and filled with personal experiences grouped into major themes throughout six chapters. Readers will see the real faces of nurses who have led the way in demonstrating their political influence on political processes and policy outcomes at local, state, and national levels. Beginning with a review of the historical nature of nurses' political activities from the late 1800s, the authors recount the political struggles of early nursing leaders as well as the current level of political awareness and activism that has grown over time. Significant efforts of organized nursing as a social force are summarized, including the establishment of the National Institute for Nursing Research. Feldman and Lewenson identify lessons nurses have learned about negotiating the political process, such as fund-raising, grassroots efforts, political affiliations, campaign management, power, and personal investment. An excellent resource. Undergraduate and graduate students; professionals; two-year technical program students. A. Woodtli; University of Arizona
