Publishers Weekly Review

Leante, the winner of this year's coveted 2007 Alfaguara Prize, is a fairly obscure Spanish author of several novels, including El canto del zaigú (2000), El vuelo de las termitas (2003), and Academia Europa (2003). This latest novel tells the story of Montserrat Cambra and Santiago San Román, two young Barcelona natives who fall in love, fall apart, and struggle to make sense of their own lives and the turbulent times in which they live. Set in both Barcelona and the Spanish Sahara during the mid to late Seventies, the novel aptly captures life in the colony from the perspective of Santiago, who is sent to the Sahara as a soldier around the time of the Green March when the Moroccan government began to take back Spanish territory. While the relationship between the two characters-and the possibility of their reencounter after years of separation-is the main focus of this magnificent novel, what makes it truly outstanding is how it depicts the desert's all-encompassing, never-ending power. From the descriptions of Santiago's wanderings down the streets of Tindouf to Montse's accidental journey from Barcelona to the Sahara, Leante's evocative prose envelops the reader in the barren yet inherently poetic land of northern Africa. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries, as well as bookstores servicing readers of Spanish-language literary fiction.Andrea Montejo, New York City (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC.
