Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This is a collection of essays which address: the nature and extent of issues facing contemporary Caribbean societies; the character of strategies employed by current leaders dealing with those issues; and the consequences of those attempts. All the essays have an economic emphasis, and assume the dependency of the Caribbean.

CHOICE Review

Contributors to this collection emphasize present and future; each article examines some or all of the formerly British Caribbean, with other areas noted parenthetically. Topics include social development and change; education and health care (US Virgin Islands); economic problems, capital, tourism, and labor migration; the International Bauxite Association; foreign policy (Cuba toward black Africa, and Brazil toward the Lower Caribbean Basin). Each of the 12 chapters has footnotes and/or a list of references; most have tables; there is no general bibliography. All essays have an economic emphasis and assume the dependency of the Caribbean area. The editors and contributors obviously are academics, but are otherwise unidentified; the volume apparently is the result of a conference--also unidentified. The collection is uneven, and it will be useful only to those who already understand the Caribbean's history and economy well. -B. B. Solnick, SUNY at Albany
