CHOICE Review

Developed in response to the atheoretical nature of much research on ethnic differences, this collection represents forward movement in the search for an explicit theoretical framework for rendering coherent a multiplicity of sociocultural variables. Although the collected articles represent many, at times conflicting, viewpoints, they fulfill the 1990-91 mandate of APA's task force on cultural diversity, creating a resource work for serious scholars. Given the sheer numerical proportion of women of color in the world, this contribution to overcoming their marginality as a topic in feminist psychology is long overdue. Landrine, Klonoff, and Brown-Collins's chapter on methodology argues for change, offering reasons for generalizing anthropology's emic and etic approach to feminist research. Several chapters include important recommendations for those researchers concerned with diversity, and most discuss the confounding variable of power. Attention is drawn to areas where further research is sorely needed, such as the omission of ethnicity in studies of gender socialization. The generalizability problem presented by the concept of the socially constructed self is given attention, as is cautious support to the framework of contextual behaviorism. Extensive chapter bibliographies, supplemented by tables, charts, and an appendix. Upper-division undergraduate through professional. L. M. C. Abbott California School of Professional Psychology
