CHOICE Review

Until the recent past, knowledge of the Mexican Revolution centered on national events. In the minds of English-speaking readers, it seemed simply to revolve around Pancho Villa, Emiliano Zapata, Francisco Villa, and sometimes Ricardo Flores Magaon. LaFrance's book is one of a dozen or so regional histories written in the past decade about the Mexican Revolution that contribute greatly to a reinterpretation of the 20th-century's first social revolution. The text is easy to read and follow, beginning with a background chapter synthesizing Puebla's history from pre-Columbian times through the Porfirio Diaz era. Fascinating is the information about precursor movements, especially that of the Partido Liberal Mexicano and about Aquiles Serdan, whose name is found frequently on streets throughout Mexico but about whom little is written. Most important, however, is that LaFrance's work gives an excellent insight into the blunders and fall of the Madero administration from the vantage point of Puebla. A strong index and bibliography add to the book's usefulness. College, university, and public libraries. -R. Acuna, California State University, Northridge
