Kuritz introduces basic acting techniques through a series of simple exercises. the section on verse analyzes accent and rhythm with examples of dialog, while the comedy chapter lists 15 examples of comic situations, along with definitions and examples of comic figures of speech. CHOICE Review

A resource for the novice actor, one who is beginning the serious study of performance, this excellent book ignites the imagination and reflects Kuritz's thoughtful passion for his subject. It is more straightforward and simple to understand than most books on acting. Kuritz (Bates College) includes short quotations from various sources to clarify what he is outlining. A large part of the book relates to verse and language for the actor. This section is quite good and easy to understand. The author focuses on comedy and its role in the skills each actor should possess. The included exercises are practical and appropriate for the beginner; too many acting guides are so full of minutia and irrelevant information that they can discourage and confuse the novice. Intended as a textbook but useful as a library resource as well, this unique book goes to the heart of each issue, each kind of training. It lays the groundwork for further study, and it opens the language of theater and the magic of acting as a craft. J. H. Conger III; Northern Kentucky University
