CHOICE Review
While researching her book Women's Suffrage in America, written under the name Elizabeth Frost (CH, Feb'93), which focused on the 19th century, Frost-Knappman became curious about "women's public achievements since the founding of the colonies." This book, covering the years 1619-1993, is the result. The bulk of the book is devoted to an alphabetical listing of topics, organizations, individuals, laws, and court cases that illuminate women's progress. The text is accompanied by contemporary illustrations. Articles are succinct and authoritative, and written with admirable clarity. It is unfortunate that two worthwhile reference books on American women's history have come out at the same time. Dorothy Weatherford's American Women's History (1994) is similar in content and format, covers many more topics, but lacks an index. Weatherford's articles tend to emphasize different aspects of the same topics, so that the two books complement one another. Academic libraries should have both titles, but if a choice has to be made, this reviewer recommends the Frost-Knappman because of its unique chronology, excellent bibliography, and detailed subject matter.
