Legal Systems of the World is the only comprehensive reference work that covers the legal systems of every nation on earth, every state in the Union, and every province of Canada.

Legal Systems of the World: A Political, Social, and Cultural Encyclopedia is the only comprehensive reference work geared to the ordinary reader and legal scholar alike that answers these critical questions. Kritzer, professor of political science and law at the University of Wisconsin, also analyzes transnational judicial bodies such as the World Court and the European Court of Human Rights, examines alternative legal systems from Roman to Islamic law, and explains universal legal institutions and concepts, from law schools to constitutional review.

Library Journal Review

This impressive encyclopedia of international jurisprudence is truly global in scope and coverage. Kritzer (political science and law, Univ. of Wisconsin-Madison) has assembled a notable team of scholars and experts from around the world who have contributed nearly 400 separate entries to the four-volume set. Every country on earth, every state in the United States, and every province in Canada is covered, as are legal principles and concepts that have historically been observed as common to all. International judicial bodies and political organizations that are quasilegal in nature also appear. Each country segment follows a specific pattern and is therefore useful for comparative study. Such a typical entry includes general information about the country, its history, and an explanation of its political structure, followed by a detailed anatomy of its judicial system and underlying legal concepts. How a country's courts are organized, how its judges are appointed and approved, and the manner in which the judicial system is divided and administered receive considerable attention from each contributor. Each country essay concludes with an analysis and evaluation by the contributor of the comparative status of the nature, level, and extent of the autonomy and legitimacy of judicial institutions within the respective nation. Each country profile is accompanied by helpful maps, charts, and a bibliography. Quasijudicial practices such as arbitration and supranational bodies such as the International Criminal Court in The Hague are thoroughly explicated, complete with an assessment of their impact as evolving and maturing legal institutions. This book is syntactically and stylistically appealing to a broad range of readers (it is even being touted on Wal-Mart's web site, at a ten percent discount, no less) and is recommended for public and academic libraries. Booklist Review

This hefty set contains a wealth of information about legal concepts, procedures, and developments throughout the world. Although the emphasis is on current legal systems of political entities, some articles, such as Napoleonic Code and Inquisitorial procedure, address historic matters and others deal with broader concepts, such as Indigenous and folk legal systems, Islamic law, and Natural law. Of obvious value to anyone interested in comparative analyses of legal matters, the set will also be useful to persons contemplating business or legal activities around the world and anyone wanting to comprehend the social operations of another country. More than 400 signed, alphabetically arranged entries provide historical background, describe the legal structures and the types of personnel required to maintain them, and explain key concepts. Additional information includes legal education requirements, specific oddities of particular systems, and the impact of political and legal developments on other systems. Most of the 350 contributors are identified with universities, law schools, law firms, and government agencies. Simple maps accompany the country articles and include inset globes that help the reader locate the less-familiar places. Organizational charts included in the country and U.S. state and Canadian province entries show relationships among the various courts in each jurisdiction. The lists of references and further reading at the end of each entry direct the readers to additional sources. A work of this magnitude is created over time, and some of the articles already need updating (such as the one that includes a chart of salaries of state court judges dated 1999 and, of course, the one on Afghanistan that was written before September 11, 2001). Nevertheless, this is a valuable compilation of information on a subject that affects us all. Recommended for legal, academic, and large public libraries.
