CHOICE Review
Adopting a constructivist approach to discipline and classroom management, Kohn challenges some deeply held basic assumptions about the nature of children, and the widely practiced quick-fix classroom management strategies that have resulted. He recommends that the basic needs of children (autonomy, relatedness, and competence) be considered in order to create a sense of community in the classroom, thereby empowering students. Kohn discusses the problems arising both from classroom management strategies based on behavior theory (reward and punishment) and from the so-called new approaches. He recommends a constructivist model that focuses on the process as well as the product. He also discusses the advantages of adopting such a student-centered model, the prerequisites and strategies involved, and ways to deal with problems arising out of such innovative models. Kohn's ideas are similar to the humanistic approaches proposed by Abraham Maslow and Carl R. Rogers. Highly recommended for libraries, schools, and colleges, especially for those interested in creating learning communities. P.
