Koch and Fisher have updated and expanded the latter's highly respected 1984 book, Power of the Presidency. In Presidential Leadership, the authors explore the transformational style of leadership in greater depth. This theory is based on a strong, charismatic university president who leads and transforms the university through the power of his or her own vision for the future. The provocative arguments offered throughout the book are based both on empirical studies and on the authors' personal experiences as university presidents. Chapters on total quality management, presidential spouses, and fund raising are new to this edition, as are 11 appendixes offering sample materials for conducting presidential searches.

CHOICE Review
Collegial leadership is an oxymoron peddled by transactional theorists using unverifiable methodology. Such transactional leadership cannot produce substantive improvement and undermines the mission of higher education to improve economic welfare and enrich the human condition. Those who need this book need it sorely. The authors point out how Brooks Brothers suits impress local aristocracies. The book promotes mystery (i.e., charisma) as science; although only extraordinary persons exercise charismatic leadership, charismatic influence can be accomplished by anyone of reasonable intelligence and strong motivation. (However, on mystery see John Keegan's The Mask of Command, 1987, and Judgment under Uncertainty, ed. by D. Kahneman, P. Slovic, and A. Tversky, 1982.) This dismayingly underedited tract sacrifices its important message by relying on caricature and unwarranted generalization. Forsaking the principle of contradiction, it confuses willing with causing, effect with perception, description with prescription, and prudence with ethics (see Edward G. Rozycki, "Is Moral Leadership Possible?" Philosophy of Education: Proceedings of the 49th Annual Meeting of the Philosophy of Education Society, 1993, p. 266-274). Graduate; faculty. E. G.
