A suggested reading list is also included for most terms--the more controversial and complicated entries, not the self- evident ones. Includes a subject index (unlike many works in the dictionary format). Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Includes bibliographical references and index.

Library Journal Review

The newest entry in this series features a straightforward format. The 600 main entries include up-to-date definitions, explanations of the significance of the entries, suggested readings on major topics, and cross-references. Selected for their interest to readers seeking information on urban planning, law, geography, sociology, economics, public policy, and administration, the entries range from commonplace terms to esoteric ones. For that reason, this dictionary will prove useful for both specialists and novices in the field. A valuable resource in academic and public libraries.-- William L. CHOICE Review

Another useful contribution from the series "Clio Dictionaries in Political Science." Smith and Klemanski's volume complements and, in some cases, even improves upon J.M. Elliot and S.R. Ali's State and Local Government Dictionary (CH, Jan'89). The Urban Politics Dictionary contains nearly 600 terms, which, according to the book's introduction, is twice the number for other dictionaries in the series. The entries, arranged alphabetically, contain brief descriptions and explanations of the significance of the listed terms. About one third of the entries have suggested reading lists for further study. The dictionary has an index and see-also references. Whereas Elliott and Ali covered abstract concepts and theory, Smith and Klemanski have focused much more on the practical problems of urban policy and administrative development, and their volume thus becomes a record of successful and unsuccessful urban programs developed by federal and state government during the last 40 years. The work does have two drawbacks: no bibliography and limitation to the Canadian/American experience in urban development. However, the dictionary would interest historians, political scientists, social scientists, and other students of the urban political scene. Recommended for academic libraries at all levels and for large public libraries. -J.A. Shuler, Colgate University
