CHOICE Review

Arguing for greater emphasis on organizational health, resulting from processes of organizational change, Klarreich says that "restructuring, downsizing, realignments, mergers, rightsizings and eventual reinvention" lead to fewer employees (middle managers in particular), workload increase, and working "smarter" but harder. This results in increased anger, frustration, impatience, and interpersonal conflict, and "people seem to be running flat out in an attempt to do their work, keep their jobs, and 'look good' in the process." Nineteen contributors respond to the editor's challenge, presenting 11 interventions to promote organizational health and four papers on organizational renewal. For the most part, authors justify their arguments on prescriptive and explanatory grounds ("It makes good sense to . . .") rather than support them empirically. Though called a "handbook," this volume lacks a comprehensive conceptual framework. With a few exceptions, it fails to formulate empirically supported procedures and strategies as one would expect from a handbook; instead, it presents current thinking, based on the experience of 19 professionals committed to building healthier organizations. Laudable though that may be, this reviewer was hoping for a treatise on organizational health that acknowledged and discussed the morality of downsizing and went beyond mention of "a severance package" and "funds for retraining" in discussing job elimination. Professional collections only. D. Sydiaha emeritus, University of Saskatchewan
