This major text provides the first comprehensive anthology of the key topics arising in the philosophy of psychology. Bringing together internationally renowned authors, including Herb Simon, Karl Pribram, Joseph Rychlak, Ullin T Place and Adolf Gr[um]unbaum, this volume offers a stimulating and informative addition to contemporary debate.
With the cognitive revolution of the 1960s, there has been a resurgence of interest in the study of the philosophical assumptions and implications of psychology. Several significant themes, such as the foundations of knowledge, behaviourism, rationality, emotion and cognitive science span both philosophy and psychology, and are covered here along with a wide range of issues in the fields of folk psychology, clinical psychology, neurophysiology and professional ethics.
Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review
O'Donohue (Univ. of Nevada, Reno) and Kitchener (Colorado State Univ.) hold that a survey of the philosophy of psychology should cover issues in the "epistemology, metaphysics and ethics of psychology." Such an approach is said to distinguish this work from most others in this area, which tend to narrowly focus on "issues related to cognitive psychology and cognitive science." The desired breadth is accomplished by offering five sections. The one on clinical psychology is the weakest, containing just three papers, two of them on psychoanalysis. The introduction to the section does not introduce the reader to the range of issues in this area. The ethics section offers a more representative fare of topics. One of the longer parts is devoted to a discussion of different forms of behaviorism. The editors justify its inclusion by claiming its relevance to contemporary issues. The longest section is on philosophical issues dealing with cognitive science and contains papers on computationalism, biological models of the mind, emotions, and an extended subsection on folk psychology. Though the book begins with a section on epistemological issues in the foundations of psychology, those who do not accept the editors' view about what should be surveyed in this field may find their favorite area underrepresented.
