Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

This book examines case studies of recent prison riots in five states, including the 1971 radical uprising in Attica, New York, and the infamous 1981 bloodbath at the New Mexico Penitentiary. The most extensive and detailed work yet written on US prison riots, the authors explain the occurrence and variations of riots as a reflection of the administrative breakdown of the prison system within a changing ideological context. A theoretical appendix helps make this work an ideal introduction to sociological theories of collective action.

CHOICE Review

A valuable addition to the available literature on the culture of prisons and the issues and problems associated with these institutions. The authors focus on two significant riots in the 1970s, Attica and Joliet, and three in the 1980s, New Mexico, Michigan, and West Virginia; their analysis has implications for prison administrators as well as for state and federal policymakers. The relation between the nature of riots and the larger society is addressed in a useful and understandable manner. Drawing on a variety of sociological theories, the authors offer conclusions on the causes, development, variation, and effects of prison riots. The book provides a historical context for both decades as well as an in-depth assessment of the five riots. The ten appendixes are most helpful for the reader. The book provides a recent update of earlier works, such as G.M. Sykes's The Society of Captives (1958) and R.A. McGee's Riots and Disturbances in Correctional Institutions (1953). Extensive references and a general index. Most useful for professionals in corrections, policymakers, and graduate students. -R. T. Crow, University of Alabama
