CHOICE Review

Covering 27 countries and territories (from Pakistan to Korea and Japan) with more than half the world's population, this volume proves that Asia's diversity is too great for two scholars to handle. Its errors of fact, analysis, and omission-most noticeable for entries on Southeast Asia-demonstrate why encyclopedias rely on multiple authorship. Attention has been given to timely entries, up to early 1985 in some cases, but this dates the volume more quickly. Users are better advised to consult the Asia Yearbook (published annually by the Far Eastern Economic Review) in any case. Chapters group thematic entries, but an alphabetic approach with cross-references would provide easier access than do the country guide and less-than-comprehensive index. Despite these failings, its treatment of East and South Asia and the absence of a comparable work justify its consideration for reference collections-recognizing that the entries for Southeast Asia are, at best, questionable. Although narrower in scope, the new Political Parties of Asia and the Pacific, ed. by H. Fukui (1985), is a far more detailed and authoritative treatment of the subject.-K. Mulliner, Ohio University
