CHOICE Review

Though this book identifies executive coaching as a subdiscipline of consulting psychology, practitioners of executive coaching represent varied professions and disciplines. Kilburg and Diedrich pulled these 27 articles from four issues of Consulting Psychology Journal (1996-2005), with the intent of increasing access to the subject and providing more systematic research about this phenomenon. They divide the articles in four sections, each with an introduction: the roots of executive coaching and attempts to define it; models for eliciting desired personal, professional, and organizational outcomes; situations, barriers, and opportunities for the practice of executive coaching; and case studies illustrating executive coaching transactions. The editors are well qualified for this task. Both are noted professionals in the field. Kilburg, the author of five books, has written widely on executive coaching and managerial competence; Diedrich has more than 35 years of experience in consulting, training, teaching, research, and educational psychology. Summing Up: Recommended. Upper-division undergraduates through faculty and professionals. D. Truty Northeastern Illinois University
