Descripciones mejoradas de Syndetics:

Parties and Democracy studies the actual behaviour of some four hundred governments in twenty post-war democracies. The conclusion that parties do function in accordance with modern democratic theory will serve to put moral justifications of democracy and descriptions of the system on a firmer footing.

Includes bibliographical references (p. [231]-235) and index.

CHOICE Review

During the past decade many studies have sought to build on the work of William Riker, William Gamson, Abram De Swann, and Lawrence Dodd to explain and predict the formation, duration, and behavior of party governments within parliamentary democracies. Budge and Keman have produced a major contribution to this literature of party government in capitalist democracies; the authors systematically explain the various assumptions at play in models of coalition government formation and duration. By distinguishing among models that assume strategic actions by parties based on desires to hold office, that alternatively pursue policy preference, or that combine both, the authors have highlighted, in an effective and impressive fashion, important implications for government formation, ministerial allocation, policy-making, and termination. Their cross-national findings and theoretical discussions provide an accurate and sophisticated awareness of how empirical studies can complement and enhance more rigorous mathematical postulates of parliamentary party government. This book will be widely cited and will be greatly influential in the field of comparative politics for several years to come. Graduate level. -J. D. Robertson, Texas A & M University
