CHOICE Review

A clearly written and well-organized practical manual for one of the major genres of medieval French literature. The 23-page chronology by itself would recommend the book to anyone wishing to learn more about the romance and its development from the 12th through the 14th centuries. The first five chapters trace this development. The book concludes with a chapter that treats questions of patronage, transmission, and provenance and a chapter that takes up matters of edition, adaptation, and aspects of modern critical approaches. Very handy, well-done 40-page bibliography of the medieval romances cited. One is reminded here of such standard references as Robert Bossuat's Manuel Bibliographique de la Litt'erature Fran, caise du Moyen Age (1951), and of other compendia such as J. Douglas Bruce's The Evolution of Arthurian Romance (1923). It is clear that this book deserves a place alongside these others. Highly recommended for all majors and graduate students in French and comparative literature. T. E. Vesce; Mercy College
