The reaction of plant tissue to stress is of critical importance to growers concerned with the production of horticultural or agronomical plants on a large scale. This book discusses several factors that contribute to plant stress, including freezing and chill injury, drought stress, heat shock, salt stress, and toxic metals. The detection of plant stress by remote sensing devices is also examined.

Papers from a one-day symposium held in June 1988 in Toronto, Ont., sponsored by the American Chemical Society.

Includes bibliographical references and index.

CHOICE Review

A technical work concerned with various plant environmental stresses related to horticulture. The 11 chapters are taken from a symposium sponsored by the American Chemical Society. Chapters on freeze and chill injury examine such topics as role of membrane lipids and the ability of plants to increase freeze tolerance by cold acclimation. Tolerance to drought or water stress is related to physiological and anatomical features, including the role of abscisic acid. Heat shock occurs when the temperature rises from 5 to 10 degrees above normal growth temperatures for more than 15 minutes. This induces formation of heat shock proteins whose specific function is unclear, but which may be involved with cell protein and repair after heat shock. Various cellular adaptations to salt stress are also included. The presence of heavy and toxic metals in crop plants is increasing because recycling sewage sludge containing these elements is used as soil fertilizer. A chapter on the use of remote sensing in the detection of plant stress is another of the topics covered that emphasize the nature of plant research. Each contribution is well documented with appropriate literature. Most suitable for libraries supporting undergraduate and graduate programs at colleges and universities where plant research is conducted. -W. A. Niering, Connecticut College
