Defines over 1,500 terms used in the conservation and preservation of library, archival, and media-center materials. The entries relate to such activities as book repair, deacidification, microfilm duplication, cartographic and photographic collections, and various audiovisual and magnetic media. Most of the words are standard English, but others would have benefited by a guide to their pronunciation. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.

Booklist Review

This dictionary provides definitions of approximately 1,500 terms for techniques used in conserving and preserving books, microforms, maps, and other media. Written by a library science educator (DePew) and a director of a micrographic preservation service (Jones), it is meant to serve as a companion to DePew's Library, Media, and Archival Preservation Handbook (ABC-Clio, 1991). Definitions are, for the most part, brief (averaging about 5-10 lines in length). Citations to the sources of the definitions are provided. Sampling indicates that about half of the definitions have been culled from other authoritative sources (including 55 books, journal articles, and technical reports); half were provided by the authors. Historically significant words such as parchment and vellum can be found in other library science dictionaries (e.g., Harrod's Librarian's Dictionary, ALA Glossary of Library and Information Science), but most of the terms included here are largely absent from other standard dictionaries of librarianship. Some terms (e.g., ASTM, halon, NAB) might also be found in discipline-specific or acronym dictionaries, but one would have to look in several sources rather than just one. The definitions are comprehensible to the nonspecialist, and the selection of terms to be defined includes many recent words as well as terms covering nonbook materials, including photographic processes. Words in a definition that are defined elsewhere in the book are in capital letters, although the authors sometimes capitalize phrases that are actually two (or more) separate listings. The user does not know in advance whether to look up the phrase in its entirety or to look up individual words (e.g., under acid, one finds "ALUM-ROSIN SIZING" but must look up both alum and then rosin size). One other peculiarity in terms of access is that in many cases there are no references from abbreviations or acronyms to the spelled-out form. For instance, there is no reference from DEZ to diethyl zinc or from PVA to polyvinyl acetate; however, for Hz, EF, and ADC references are provided. This inconsistency could cause unwary users to miss some definitions. Included also are terms associated with computer preservation areas (e.g., CD-ROM, laser disc), building and insurance issues (flashing, expediting expense), and the publishing industry (quire, beater). This dictionary is unique in its focus, and the authors' provision of definitions for terms not covered elsewhere (about half of the entries) makes it one from which future sources in the field will draw. It will be quite useful for library school educators and students. Academic libraries serving either of these audiences should purchase this book, and large public libraries involved in preservation projects might also consider purchase. (Reviewed Sept. 15, 1992)
