Booklist Review

In Protecting Intellectual Freedom in Your Academic Library, one finds one finds not only information on the topic of protecting intellectual freedom but the ALA Intellectual Freedom documents. In Protecting Intellectual Freedom in Your School Library, one finds the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and the Library Bill of Rights. This difference alone makes it worthwhile to purchase both items, especially since materials for one population often will overlap materials for another. The academic library volume covers collection development; Internet access; and exhibit spaces, programs, and rooms. Privacy and confidentiality are also covered. The school library volume, on the other hand, covers materials selection, library management and programs, library access, labeling and privacy, and Internet access. A useful feature in the school volume is a workbook for selection policy writing. With only one overlapping chapter, both volumes would be valuable additions to any size of library serving the general population with an interest in protecting the intellectual freedom of both patrons and staff.--Marcus, Sara Copyright 2009 Booklist
