CHOICE Review

Sometimes volumes in a standardized series like this are perfunctory overviews, usable for quick reference but void of anything new. Johnston (Dickinson College) soars above the usual expectations. She succinctly synthesizes what Welty criticism has already accomplished (and judiciously illustrates this accomplishment in reprints of seven important essays); she offers for reexamination three key pieces in which Welty reflects on her own work; and she charts new ground in four brilliant chapters analyzing a significant sample of Welty's 43 collected stories. Johnston focuses on Welty's intertwined use of visual and lyrical experimental techniques and the two springs--"one bright, one dark"--that feed her themes. As she looks beneath the sheltered writer's bright celebration of harmonies, the author reveals the dark daring of the "conflicts beneath the smooth surface." Some stories that have been given such short shrift by other critics that they seemed minor rise to new prominence under Johnston's prodding. Perhaps better than anyone so far, Johnston elucidates Welty's often mystifying use of myth--especially Milton's Adam and Eve and Yeats's Wandering Aengus. A chronology, well-selected bibliography, and lucid style make this volume valuable for beginners; its deliciously provocative new readings recommend it to professionals as well. A. J. Griffith; Our Lady of the Lake University
