Booklist Review

Library education is increasingly incorporating service learning as part of the program because it provides a useful reality check for theory and facilitates student reflection on value-added service. This volume is made up of 18 chapters written by library educators, graduate students, and practitioners. A short chapter provides a historical perspective on service learning, and a couple of other chapters offer theoretical models. Most of the chapters focus on course-based beneficial practices in the U.S. and Canada, teasing out the factors for success. Several chapters highlight at-risk and disadvantaged user populations such as Latinos, Native Americans, and the incarcerated. The perspectives of several stakeholders administrators, faculty, and students, including international students are analyzed. The variety of approaches within this volume makes for interesting reading and may inspire the reader to try some of the strategies.--Farmer, Lesley Copyright 2009 Booklist
