In Victimized Daughters Janet Liebman Jacobs offers an important contribution to the understanding of sexual trauma. Drawing on interviews with fifty incest survivors from a range of ethnic, racial and socioeconomic backgrounds, she examines the effects of incest on the personality formation of victimized daughters, particularly the role the incestuous father plays in the process.

CHOICE Review

Jacobs (Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) views incest through a feminist, rather than a child protection, lens and focuses on the impact of incest on the daughter's sense of self. This study integrates feminist psychological theory with interviews with 50 women sexual abuse survivors. Jacobs begins by discussing the destruction of the mother-daughter bond in incestuous families. Her analysis then moves to complex issues involving the daughter's relationship with the perpetrator. The daughter may idealize or identify with the incestuous father; frequently she empathizes with and cares for him. Jacobs discusses consequences of these processes for the daughter in the form of revictimization, powerlessness, dissociation, and denial of her body. The final chapter describes the process of "change and transformation" some victims achieve, over time, with therapy. This short book is enriched with appropriate quotations from the informants. However, the complexity of the feminist developmental and therapeutic theories will be difficult for undergraduates without considerable background. Although it appears easy to read, it is actually quite demanding. Highly recommended for libraries serving graduate programs in psychology, social work, or feminist studies as well as therapists who treat women. M. E. Elwell; Salisbury State University
