Nationalism is one of the most powerful forces in the modern world, yet its study has only recently gained popularity. This reader gives historical depth to the recent debates on nationalism and traces the development of thought on nationalism across a wide range of issues with reference to texts spanning from Ernest Renan's What is a Nation? in the 1880s to current views given in the 1990s.Issues covered include the definitions of the nation and of nationalism, theories of nationalism, the origins of nations, nationalism in Europe, the Third World and within the International System, and the future of nationalism itself.

Includes bibliographical references.

CHOICE Review

This is the first reader to be published on the subject of nationalism in many years. It is an invaluable collection of 49 expertly chosen extracts from the key authors in the field. The book includes a representative of each major theoretical approach, historical epoch, and geographical domain. The first section covers definitions (from Renan and Stalin to Weber and Connor) and the second section theories (Gellner, Hobsbawm, Anderson, Brass, and others.) The third section deals with the premodern era, the fourth with European nationalisms, and the fifth with nationalism outside Europe. The sixth section addresses the international system, and the seventh offers postindustrialist and postmodernist perspectives. The collection will become the standard work in courses on nationalism. Its pithy extracts will introduce students to the breadth of the literature in the field, and will stimulate them to follow up by reading the original sources at greater length. Undergraduate. P.
